Reference intake range (RI)

Description:

Value set for energy-yielding macronutrients. It is expressed as the proportion (%) of energy derived from that macronutrient. RIs represent ranges of intakes that are adequate for maintaining health.A calorie-containing component of food (e.g. fat, protein, carbohydrate) which is needed in significant quantities for normal growth, development and maintenance of health

Context:

In food safety and nutrition, a Reference Intake (RI) range is a set of recommended amounts of nutrients—such as energy, fats, sugars, vitamins, and minerals—that people should consume daily to stay healthy. It provides a benchmark for understanding whether a diet meets nutritional needs without exceeding safe limits.

EFSA uses Reference Intake ranges to guide dietary advice, assess population nutrient intakes, and support the development of food labelling and health claims. By comparing actual consumption to these ranges, EFSA helps regulators and consumers understand if people are meeting their nutritional needs safely.
