Webinar on software tool for celiac disease risk assessment of proteins

30 June 2022, 16:30 – 18:00 (CEST)

According to the EFSA GMO Panel guidance document on allergenicity, an HLA-DQ peptide modelling approach should be applied, on a case-by-case basis, to assess the capacity of novel proteins in food and feed to cause celiac disease. However, to date such a modelling tool specifically designated for risk assessment purposes is not currently available. A publicly accessible software tool developed for such purposes will deliver a more robust, transparent and reproducible assessment of proteins.

To this end, EFSA is developing a software tool with the ability to identify peptides binding to HLA-DQ2 and/or HLA-DQ8 proteins and to predict their binding affinities. EFSA is holding a public webinar to present the tool developed so far. This activity should also facilitate the testing phase of the tool which will be run until April/May 2023.

The webinar is aimed at EFSA stakeholders, including applicants, Member States, NGOs, academia, research groups or any person from the public interested in understanding the methods used for the safety assessment of proteins by EFSA. Participants will have the opportunity to submit questions during the webinar.

After the event, the webinar recording and presentations will be published on the EFSA website.
