Biological monitoring of animal health

EFSA plays a crucial role in collecting and analysing biological monitoring data submitted annually by Member States, research institutions, and food business operators. This data is crucial for EFSA's scientific opinions and reports, aiding risk managers in establishing legislative limits and ensuring the safety of the food chain.
The Animal Health Law, Regulation (EU) 2016/429 on transmissible animal diseases, has been in force since 21 April 2021. It reinforced animal health as a fundamental component of food safety and security, which remains at the heart of the European Union’s Farm to Fork Strategy.
