Wetenschappelijk comité
Het Wetenschappelijk Comité ontwikkelt geharmoniseerde methodologieën voor risicobeoordeling in wetenschappelijke kwesties van horizontale aard op de gebieden binnen het werkterrein van EFSA waarop nog geen EU-brede aanpak is vastgesteld. Het Comité biedt algemene coördinatie om te zorgen voor consistentie in de wetenschappelijke adviezen die door de wetenschappelijke panels van EFSA worden opgesteld. Daarnaast levert het strategisch wetenschappelijk advies aan het bestuur van EFSA.
De leden van het Wetenschappelijk Comité zijn vooraanstaande wetenschappers uit alle delen van Europa die erkend zijn om hun wetenschappelijke expertise in uiteenlopende disciplines binnen het werkterrein van EFSA en over de nodige anciënniteit en ervaring beschikken binnen wetenschappelijke organisaties:
- risicobeoordelingspraktijken – beoordeling van risico’s voor de menselijke gezondheid, voedselconsumptie en blootstellingsevaluatie, milieurisicobeoordeling, beoordeling van risico’s voor de diergezondheid, toxicologie, microbiologie, menselijke voeding, epidemiologie, diergezondheid, dierenwelzijn, menselijke geneeskunde, diergeneeskunde, levensmiddelenhygiëne, levensmiddelentechnologie, chemie, biologie, biochemie, biowetenschappen.
- wetenschappelijke vraagstukken met een transversaal karakter – statistische benaderingen op het gebied van risicobeoordeling, opstelling van richtsnoeren voor de veiligheidsbeoordeling van toepassingen van nieuwe technologieën op het gebied van levens- en voedermiddelen, harmonisatie van het gebruik van standaardaannames bij gebrek aan feitelijke gegevens, veiligheidsbeoordeling van plantaardige producten en preparaten, en invoering van gevalideerde aanvullende technieken voor risicobeoordeling die berusten op “-omica”-technologieën, QSAR-analyse en mathematische modellen.
Work programme
The current Scientific Committee work programme runs from 2025 to 2027. Towards the end of 2026, a consultation of EFSA panels and units will take place to gather ideas to be discussed for possible inclusion in the next work programme spanning 2027-2029. The document includes recently added topics for the development of cross-cutting guidance documents.

Networks
What are EFSA's networks?
EFSA’s networks consist of nationally appointed EU Member State organisations with expertise in the fields covered by the network. Representatives of the Commission and of other organisations (including those from outside the EU) with specific expertise may also be invited to participate in the work of EFSA Networks.
Networks are chaired by EFSA and supported by relevant EFSA units. Their aim is to facilitate scientific cooperation in the field of EFSA’s mission by:
- coordinating activities,
- exchanging information,
- developing and implementing joint projects,
- and exchanging expertise and best practices.

Emerging Risks Exchange Network
EFSA networks with Member States, EU and international agencies on exchanging data, methodologies and lessons learnt on emerging risks through its Emerging Risks Exchange Network (EREN).

Risk assessment of nanotechnologies in food and feed
The main goals are to facilitate harmonisation of assessment practices and methodologies, enhance exchange of information and data between EFSA and Member States, and achieve synergies in risk assessment activities.
