Tieteellinen komitea
Tieteellinen komitea laatii yhdenmukaistettuja riskinarviointimenetelmiä monialaisista tieteellisistä kysymyksistä sellaisilla EFSAn toimeksiantoon kuuluvilla aloilla, joilla ei ole vielä määritetty EU:n laajuisia toimintatapoja. Se vastaa myös yleisestä koordinoinnista, jonka avulla varmistetaan, että EFSAn tieteellisten lautakuntien laatimat tieteelliset lausunnot ovat johdonmukaisia. Lisäksi se antaa strategista tieteellistä neuvontaa EFSAn johdolle.
Tieteellisen komitean jäsenet ovat nimekkäitä tutkijoita eri puolilta Eurooppaa. Heillä on tunnustettua tieteellistä huippuasiantuntemusta, ja heidän erikoisalojaan ovat kaikki EFSAn toimeksiantoon kuuluvat tieteenalat. Jäsenet ovat hyvin kokeneita, ja heillä on aiempaa kokemusta myös tieteellisten elinten jäsenyydestä.
- Riskinarviointikäytäntö – ihmisten terveyteen kohdistuva riskinarviointi, ravinnonsaannin ja altistumisen arviointi, ympäristöriskin arviointi, eläinten terveyteen kohdistuva riskinarviointi, toksikologia, mikrobiologia, ihmisten ravitsemus, epidemiologia, eläinten terveys, eläinten hyvinvointi, lääketiede, eläinlääketiede, elintarvikehygienia, elintarviketeknologia, kemia, biologia, biokemia, biotieteet.
- Tieteidenväliset tieteelliset kysymykset – tilastotieteelliset lähestymistavat riskinarvioinnissa, ohjeiden laatiminen elintarvikkeisiin ja rehuihin liittyviä uusia teknologioita koskevien hakemusten turvallisuusarviointiin, oletusarvojen käytön yhtenäistäminen todellisten tietojen puuttuessa, kasviperäisten aineiden ja kasviperäisten valmisteiden turvallisuusarviointi sekä validoitujen täydentävien tekniikoiden käyttöönotto riskinarvioinnissa (ns. omiikka-teknologioiden, QSAR-mallien ja matemaattisten mallien hyödyntäminen).
Work programme
The current Scientific Committee work programme runs from 2025 to 2027. Towards the end of 2026, a consultation of EFSA panels and units will take place to gather ideas to be discussed for possible inclusion in the next work programme spanning 2027-2029. The document includes recently added topics for the development of cross-cutting guidance documents.

Networks
What are EFSA's networks?
EFSA’s networks consist of nationally appointed EU Member State organisations with expertise in the fields covered by the network. Representatives of the Commission and of other organisations (including those from outside the EU) with specific expertise may also be invited to participate in the work of EFSA Networks.
Networks are chaired by EFSA and supported by relevant EFSA units. Their aim is to facilitate scientific cooperation in the field of EFSA’s mission by:
- coordinating activities,
- exchanging information,
- developing and implementing joint projects,
- and exchanging expertise and best practices.

Emerging Risks Exchange Network
EFSA networks with Member States, EU and international agencies on exchanging data, methodologies and lessons learnt on emerging risks through its Emerging Risks Exchange Network (EREN).

Risk assessment of nanotechnologies in food and feed
The main goals are to facilitate harmonisation of assessment practices and methodologies, enhance exchange of information and data between EFSA and Member States, and achieve synergies in risk assessment activities.
