Following a request from five European countries, EFSA’s Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was tasked to provide scientific advice on a tolerable upper intake level (UL) or safe level of intake for dietary (total/added/free) sugars, i.e. the maximum level of total chronic daily intake of sugars (from all sources) judged to be unlikely to pose a risk of adverse health effects to humans. The panel’s interpretation of the terms of reference was outlined in a protocol (EFSA, 2018), which was subject to a public consultation from 9 January to 4 March 2018. A technical meeting with stakeholders was held on 13 February 2018, during the consultation period.
This stakeholder meeting has been organised to discuss the draft scientific opinion, which is currently open for public consultation from 22 July to 30 September 2021.
Objectives of the meeting
The aims of the meeting are to:
- explain the scientific principles and rationale behind the draft scientific opinion on dietary sugars;
- provide clarifications to stakeholders and collect their feedback on the methods and data used in the assessment and the conclusions reached by EFSA's NDA Panel before finalisation of the scientific opinion.
Structure of the meeting
The meeting will be an interactive online event. EFSA experts and staff will explain the conclusions of the draft opinion and address questions and comments in several Q&A sessions.
The presentations will be published on the EFSA website after the event.
Who should attend?
The meeting is open to all interested stakeholders.
Participation is free, but registration is compulsory. The registration deadline is 13/09/2021.
