Info Session on Applications – Pesticides - Workshop with stakeholders on EFSA Guidance Document on the Risk Assessment of Plant Protection Products on Bees (Apis mellifera, Bombus spp. and solitary bees)
EFSA held a workshop with pesticide specialists from Member States, industry and consumer groups to present, exchange points of view and clarify the main points of the Authority’s Guidance Document on the Risk Assessment of Plant Protection Products on Bees. The workshop, which was organised by EFSA’s Pesticides Unit and Applications Desk Unit and was attended by more than 50 delegates, as well as a representative from the European Commission, was also an opportunity for an open dialogue on the issues raised during the public consultations on the draft Guidance Document.
Delegates were welcomed by Dr. Luc Mohimont, Acting Head of EFSA’s Pesticides Unit, and Dr. Karine Lheureux, Head of the Applications Desk Unit, after which EFSA scientists and experts gave short briefings on technical aspects of the Guidance. These included a step-by-step overview of the different risk assessment schemes, a summary of the exposure assessment approach, and an introduction to the use of shortcut values and trigger values in the new Guidance. In addition, a member of EFSA’s Scientific Committee and Emerging Risks Unit presented the preliminary conclusions from EFSA’s Scientific Colloquium on Holistic Approaches to Assessing Multiple Stressors in Bees, which took place earlier this year. Each talk was followed by a question and answer session.
Summing up the meeting, Dr. Mohimont thanked delegates for contributing to a fruitful, open discussion which he said had given EFSA valuable feedback on stakeholder’ points of view on the Guidance and identified topics for further debate and study.
