EFSA to reopen opinion on perchlorate in fruit and vegetables

EFSA will re-examine its 2014 scientific opinion on perchlorate in food following confirmation that there was a technical error in the estimation of consumer exposure Concentration or amount of a particular substance that is taken in by an individual, population or ecosystem in a specific frequency over a certain amount of time to perchlorate in the diet.

Meeting in Parma this week, EFSA’s expert Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain committed to re-open the opinion and update its risk assessment A specialised field of applied science that involves reviewing scientific data and studies in order to evaluate risks associated with certain hazards. It involves four steps: hazard identification, hazard characterisation, exposure assessment and risk characterisation as soon as possible. Experts stated that the update would likely result in a change in the estimation of consumer exposure and therefore a revision of its previous final conclusions.
