passive surveillance

Descripción:

The reporting and investigation of increased mortality, other signs of serious disease or significantly reduced production rates with an undetermined cause in a targeted animal population

Context:

In food safety, passive surveillance is the systematic collection of data on foodborne hazards or diseases that are reported by others, such as laboratories, farmers, or public health authorities, rather than being actively sought out by inspectors. It relies on existing monitoring systems and notifications to detect trends or outbreaks.

EFSA uses passive surveillance data to monitor foodborne pathogens, contaminants, and zoonotic diseases across the EU. This information helps us assess risks, track trends, and provide scientific advice to EU authorities, supporting decision-making and policies to protect public health.
