When pesticides are used to protect plants from pests, we may find residues in food. These residues are assessed for possible health risks, and maximum residue levels are set to ensure our food is safe.

Keeping Europe’s food safe
Food authorities in EU countries monitor pesticide residues on our food to ensure they do not exceed EU limits and take action to prevent them from posing a health risk.
Evaluating Member State
The EU country that conducts the initial assessment of a new maximum residue level (MRL).
Conditions of use
In its application, a company must say how the pesticide should be used. These conditions of use are called Good Agricultural Practice, and include:
- the targeted crop
- when and how to apply the pesticide
- the dose
- the frequency of use
