Context:

In food safety, a synergistic effect occurs when two or more substances or stressors interact in a way that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects. For example, two chemicals might each be mildly harmful on their own, but together they could cause much stronger toxicity.

EFSA considers synergistic effects when assessing risks from multiple chemicals, contaminants, or stressors in food, feed, or the environment. By evaluating how substances may interact, EFSA can provide more accurate risk assessments, set safe limits, and give guidance to protect consumers, animals, and ecosystems.
