risk management

Description:

The management of risks which have been identified by risk assessment. It includes the planning, implementation and evaluation of any resulting actions taken to protect consumers, animals and the environment

Context:

Risk management in food safety is the process of deciding what actions to take to reduce or control food-related risks. It involves setting rules, limits, or measures to protect public health, based on scientific evidence from risk assessment.

EFSA supports risk management by providing independent scientific advice and evaluations. For example, EFSA assesses hazards like pesticide residues, contaminants, or allergens, and advises EU authorities on safe limits, control measures, and labelling requirements. While EFSA itself does not make the rules, its scientific input helps the European Commission, Member States, and other decision-makers implement policies that keep food safe for consumers.
