pandemic
An epidemic that becomes very widespread and affects a region, continent or the whole world
A pandemic is a disease outbreak that spreads across multiple countries or continents, affecting large populations. Pandemics are often caused by infectious agents like viruses and they can indirectly impact the food chain, food safety, and supply, for example by disrupting production, trade, or hygiene practices.
EFSA works on pandemics by assessing and monitoring risks to the food chain, providing scientific advice to protect public health, and supporting EU authorities in maintaining safe food supply during global health crises. We help ensure that food safety standards and preventive measures are upheld even when a pandemic affects production or distribution.
