nutrient
An element or compound needed for normal growth, development and health maintenance. Essential nutrients cannot be made by the body and must, therefore, be consumed from food
In food safety, a nutrient is a substance in food that the body needs to grow, function, and stay healthy. This includes proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Nutrients provide energy, support bodily functions, and help prevent deficiencies or diseases.
EFSA’s role is to assess the safety and adequacy of nutrients in the diet. EFSA sets Dietary Reference Values (DRVs), which are recommended intake levels for different nutrients, and evaluate the safety of nutrient supplements or fortified foods. EFSA also assesses health claims related to nutrients to ensure they are scientifically valid. Our work helps guide EU policies on nutrition, food labelling, and public health, ensuring that people get enough essential nutrients without being exposed to harmful levels.
