emerging risk
Description:
A risk to human, animal or plant health resulting from a new source or increased susceptibility or exposure to an existing source
Context:
An emerging risk in food safety is a new or increasing threat that could harm people’s health through the food chain but is not yet fully understood. This could be a new contaminant, a new foodborne pathogen, changes in production methods, or effects of climate change on food safety.
EFSA monitors emerging risks by scanning scientific literature, industry reports, and global news to spot potential hazards early. They assess these risks, provide scientific advice to EU authorities, and help guide preventive measures before the risk becomes widespread, aiming to protect consumers and keep the food supply safe.
