Online event: Update on FEEDAP guidance on the assessment of the efficacy of feed additives: what’s new

Background

As of 1 December 2024, the updated Guidance on the assessment of the efficacy of feed additives has been implemented. The scope of the guidance document, which the FEEDAP Panel adopted in June 2024, is to assist applicants in preparing and presenting their applications for the authorisation of a feed additive, as laid out in Article 7.6 of Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003.

The guidance document was developed to help applicants assess the efficacy of additives to be used in animal feed. Thus, the document aims to provide: i) insights on the requirements for efficacy demonstration for the different categories of feed additives, ii) information about the type and number of efficacy studies required, iii) a description of the principles for in vivo and in vitro studies, and iv) provide information on how to report the studies submitted as part of application dossiers.

The FEED team would like to provide an introductory session to present an overview of the Guidance, focusing on the novelties of the updated document and providing an opportunity for all stakeholders to ask questions and ensure clarity.

Objectives of the meeting

The event aimed to provide an overview of the updated guidance document on the assessment of the efficacy of feed additives, which was recently adopted (EFSA FEEDAP Panel, 2024). Particular attention was given to the areas that have been renewed from the previous version (EFSA FEEDAP Panel 2018).

A Q&A session was planned during the event to clarify potential uncertainties regarding the information required to demonstrate the efficacy of a feed additive. Therefore, attendees were invited to submit their queries before the webinar (via the registration form) or during the event.

Structure of the meeting

Following the welcoming of participants and introduction of the speakers, there were:

  • A pre-recorded presentation of the Guidance on the assessment of efficacy of feed additives and the services available for applicants in case of questions and
  • A live Q&A session

Before closing, the main aspects of the updated guidance document and the most relevant discussion points have been summarised.
