EFSA has proposed adequate intakes of iodine for children, adults and pregnant and lactating women. Iodine is an essential nutrientAny substance which a living organism must consume from the diet in order to support normal health, development and growth for humans, as it is an integral component of thyroid hormones. The richest sources of iodine are marine and dairy products, and iodised salt. Insufficient intakeThe amount of a substance (e.g. nutrient or chemical) that is ingested by a person or animal via the diet can lead to impaired thyroid function and disorders at all stages of development, particularly in pregnancy and infancy. The latest Scientific Opinion is part of EFSA’s ongoing work on dietary reference values (DRVs).
