taxonomic units (TUs)
The lowest taxonomic level for which the QPS status is granted - the species level for bacteria, yeasts and protists/algae, and family level for viruses
In food safety, taxonomic units are groups of organisms that are classified together based on shared characteristics, usually at levels like species, genus, or family. They help scientists organize and understand the diversity of microorganisms.
EFSA uses taxonomic units in its Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) system to evaluate microorganisms for use in food and feed. By grouping organisms into taxonomic units, EFSA can assess whether a whole group has a history of safe use or if some members may require further safety testing. This approach helps EFSA efficiently decide which microorganisms can be presumed safe and which need detailed evaluation.
