target population

Description:

Section of the healthy population defined by a specified age range and gender. Because of their particular physiological status, pregnant and lactating women are specific target populations

Context:

In food safety, a target population is the specific group of people that a safety assessment, nutrition recommendation, or risk evaluation focuses on. This could be, for example, infants, pregnant women, the elderly, or the general population.

EFSA uses the concept of target populations to make sure its advice is relevant and protective for those most at risk. For instance, when assessing nutrient needs, exposure to contaminants, or food additives, EFSA considers how different groups may consume foods differently or have varying sensitivities, helping set safe limits and dietary guidelines tailored to each population.
