synthetic biology (SynBio)

Description:

Field of science that combines engineering and biology with the aim of developing new biological systems and attributing new features to living cells

Context:

In food safety, synthetic biology is the scientific field where organisms, cells, or biological systems are designed or modified using engineering principles to produce new substances, foods, or microorganisms. This can include creating microorganisms that produce enzymes, vitamins, or other food ingredients.

EFSA assesses synthetic biology applications to ensure they are safe for consumers, animals, and the environment. They evaluate potential hazards, how the engineered organisms behave, and any unintended effects, providing scientific opinions that guide EU regulators in authorising or managing such products in food and feed.
