PMEM

Description:

Monitoring of the effects of a new product (e.g. a GM plant) following its release onto the market. This may reveal adverse effects which were not predicted in the risk assessment conducted prior to market release. It stands for post-market environmental monitoring

Context:

Post-market environmental monitoring (PMEM) is the process of tracking the environmental effects of a product after it has been approved and placed on the market. In food safety, this often applies to genetically modified plants, pesticides, or other agricultural products to make sure they do not cause unexpected harm to the environment, such as affecting wildlife, soil, or water quality.

EFSA uses PMEM to review reports from companies and Member States, analyse any environmental data collected after the product is used, and assess whether it remains safe. This monitoring helps EFSA provide scientific advice for ongoing regulation, ensuring that any risks are detected and managed even after a product is in use.
