nutrition

Description:

The science of how diet relates to the body's need for sustenance

Context:

Nutrition refers to the study of how the food we eat affects our health, including providing energy and essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Good nutrition helps maintain growth, bodily functions, and overall well-being, while poor nutrition can lead to deficiencies or health problems.

EFSA’s role in nutrition is to assess dietary intakes and nutrient needs, set Dietary Reference Values (DRVs), and evaluate the safety and health benefits of foods, supplements, and fortified products. EFSA also reviews nutrition and health claims to make sure they are scientifically supported. Through this work, EFSA provides guidance to inform EU policies on nutrition, labelling, and public health, helping consumers make safe and healthy food choices.
