micronutrient

Description:

Nutrient required by the body in tiny amounts for normal growth, development and maintenance of health; for example, vitamins and minerals

Context:

In food safety, a micronutrient is a nutrient that the body needs in very small amounts to stay healthy, such as vitamins and minerals. Even though only tiny amounts are required, they are essential for growth, immune function, and overall health.

EFSA uses information about micronutrients to set Dietary Reference Values (DRVs), which are recommended daily amounts to keep people healthy. We assess how much of each micronutrient people get from their diet, check for deficiencies or excessive intake, and provide scientific advice to help policymakers establish safe limits, supplementing rules, and guidance for a balanced diet.
