lipid
Fat and fat-like substance
A lipid is a type of fat found in foods, such as oils, butter, and fatty acids. Lipids provide energy, help absorb certain vitamins, and are important for overall health.
EFSA assess the safety and nutritional value of lipids. We set Dietary Reference Values (DRVs) for total fat, saturated and trans fats, and essential fatty acids, advising to limit harmful fats while encouraging beneficial ones like polyunsaturated fats and omega-3s. EFSA also evaluates health claims related to fats, checks the safety of fat-containing additives, sets limits for contaminants in fatty foods, and provides guidance on nanomaterials in lipids. Through this work, EFSA helps inform EU food policies, ensuring that both the benefits and risks of lipids are considered for public health.
