human-animal interface

Description:

A term to describe the myriad ways that animals and humans can interact, thus establishing a route for diseases to be transmitted (e.g. through foodstuffs or contaminated environments)

Context:

In food safety, the human-animal interface refers to the points where humans and animals come into contact, either directly or indirectly, in ways that could affect health.

EFSA studies the human-animal interface to understand and manage risks of diseases or contaminants that can be transmitted from animals to humans, such as foodborne pathogens, zoonotic viruses, or antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This work is closely linked to the One Health concept, which recognizes that human health, animal health, and environmental health are interconnected. By analysing these interactions, EFSA can provide guidance to reduce risks and protect public health..
