GMO non-target organism

Description:

Other organism that is not genetically modified but which may interact with, or be affected by, the presence of a GM organism

Context:

A GMO non-target organism is any living creature—like insects, birds, or soil microbes—that is not intended to be affected by a genetically modified organism (GMO) but could be exposed to it in the environment or through the food chain.

EFSA evaluates whether GMOs could unintentionally harm these non-target organisms. This includes studying the potential effects of GMO crops or their products on beneficial insects, wildlife, or microorganisms. EFSA’s assessments help ensure that GMO use in agriculture is safe for the wider ecosystem, supporting EU policies on environmental protection and sustainable food production.
