genetically modified organism
An organism which contains genetic material that has been deliberately altered and which does not occur naturally through breeding or selection
In food safety, a genetically modified organism (GMO) is a plant, animal, or microorganism whose genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally, usually to give it new traits such as resistance to pests or improved nutritional content.
EFSA evaluates GMOs to ensure they are safe for human and animal consumption and the environment. This involves assessing any new proteins or compounds produced, potential allergenicity or toxicity, and the nutritional quality of the food. EFSA’s scientific assessments help Member States and the EU make informed decisions about authorizing GMOs for the market while protecting public health.
