general function claim

Description:

A type of health claim which infers that a nutrient or food ingredient can influence the maintenance of normal human health or performance, or support weight control

Context:

A general function claim is a type of health claim on food that describes how a nutrient or food supports normal functions of the body, without referring to disease prevention or treatment. Examples include claims like “calcium contributes to normal bone maintenance” or “vitamin C supports the normal function of the immune system.”

EFSA’s role is to evaluate the scientific evidence behind general function claims. EFSA assesses whether there is a clear link between the food or nutrient and the stated normal body function, whether the effect is relevant for human health, and whether the claimed benefit can be achieved with realistic amounts consumed as part of a normal diet.

EFSA’s scientific opinions are used by the European Commission and Member States to decide which claims are authorised for use on food labels in the EU. Through this work, EFSA helps ensure that general function claims are truthful, well-substantiated, and understandable, allowing consumers to make informed dietary choices while preventing exaggerated or unsupported health messages.
