foodborne disease
An illness caused by foods or drinks which have been contaminated by toxins or harmful microbes (e.g. bacteria, viruses)
In food safety, a foodborne disease is an illness caused by consuming contaminated food or drink, typically due to harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemical substances. Common examples include salmonellosis, listeriosis, and food poisoning caused by toxins or chemical contaminants.
EFSA monitors and assesses foodborne diseases to understand their frequency, sources, and health impacts. By collecting and analysing data on outbreaks and contamination, EFSA can identify trends, assess risks from specific foods or pathogens, and provide scientific advice to reduce these risks. This information helps regulators implement measures to protect public health and prevent future cases of foodborne illness.
