biocide

Description:

A preparation of one or more active substances (see definition) designed to use chemicals or other means to kill or halt the actions of harmful organisms such as plant diseases or animal infections

Context:

In food safety, a biocide is a substance used to control harmful organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or pests, in places related to food production and handling. Biocides are commonly used for disinfection, cleaning, and pest control in food-processing facilities, kitchens, storage areas, and equipment, rather than being applied directly to food.

EFSA assesses biocides to ensure they do not pose risks to human health or the environment, especially when residues could indirectly contaminate food. EFSA evaluates how toxic these substances are, how people might be exposed to them (for example through food contact surfaces), and whether their use could lead to unsafe residues. This scientific advice supports EU decision-making on the safe use of biocides and helps protect consumers while maintaining high hygiene standards in the food chain.
