animal cloning
A technique used to make an exact genetic copy of an animal
EFSA has been asked to assess the safety of food products from cloned animals and their offspring. We evaluated potential risks for human health, animal health, and the environment, considering factors like genetics, nutrition, and possible unintended effects. EFSA has issued an opinion stating that food safety is not an issue, as there are no indications that food from clones or their offspring differs from that of conventionally bred animals. However, EFSA has identified significant animal health and welfare concerns in clones and their surrogate mothers, noting higher mortality and developmental abnormalities. EFSA's work supports the European Commission and Parliament, who ultimately decided to place a ban on the sale of cloned animals and food derived from them for farming purposes.
