adequate intake
A dietary recommendation used when there isn't enough data to calculate an average requirement. An adequate intake is the average nutrient level consumed daily by a typical healthy population that is assumed to be adequate for the population's needs
The Adequate Intake (AI) is the recommended daily amount of a nutrient that is considered sufficient to maintain good health when there isn’t enough data to set a precise average requirement. It is used when a full scientific assessment to determine an Average Requirement (AR) isn’t possible.
EFSA uses AI values to guide public health and nutrition policies, helping people understand how much of a nutrient—like vitamins, minerals, or water—they should aim to consume daily for overall health. These values also support food labelling, dietary planning, and risk assessment of nutrient intake.
