Webinar: EFSA's re-assessment of styrene safety for use in plastic food contact materials
Background
At the request of the European Commission, EFSA has conducted a re-assessment of the risks to public health related to the presence of styrene in plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. Specifically, the mandate received in 2023 asked EFSA to provide a scientific opinion addressing the following aspects:
- whether styrene is genotoxic following oral exposure, and the relevance to human health.
- whether styrene in food contact materials can be considered safe below the specific migration limit (SML) of 40 parts per billion (ppb).
EFSA’s scientific experts have finalised a draft of the scientific opinion. This preliminary version is available for public consultation, with the aim to gather input and feedback from stakeholders interested in the refinement and finalisation of the opinion.
Objectives of the webinar
Alongside the public consultation on the draft scientific opinion, EFSA organised a webinar with the following objectives:
- Explaining the mandate, the methodology followed for the re-assessment, and the conclusions reached in the draft opinion
- Illustrating the public consultation and providing guidance on how stakeholders can provide input
- Starting to address questions and requests for clarification received from stakeholders regarding the draft opinion.
At registration phase, participants had the opportunity to submit possible questions or clarification needs which were then addressed during the online event.
