Parma Summer School 2023
Background
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) – in collaboration with the University of Parma, the School of Advanced Studies on Food and Nutrition, and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Piacenza – is organising the 2023 Parma Summer School. The event will provide aspiring professionals early in their career an invaluable chance to learn from specialists in the field of innovative food products.
Over the course of the three-day programme, participants will explore different aspects related to the safety evaluation of novel food and feed sources. They will do so through a multifaceted lens, encompassing risk management, risk assessment, and societal considerations, and drawing upon various disciplines.

Objectives of the event
The 2023 Parma Summer School aims to offer early-career professionals an opportunity to learn from experts in the field of food innovation with particular attention to the EU legislative framework, sustainable food systems, alternative proteins and consumers’ perception of innovative foods.
Given the complex nature of these topics and their interrelatedness, multi-disciplinarily and multi-stakeholder approaches will be employed. The Summer School topics will be addressed across three different key areas:
- Risk assessment & legislative framework of food innovation
- Innovative food production technologies and tools
- Societal perception of food innovation
Structure of the event
The programme will include presentations and discussion groups on three thematic areas:
- Chapter 1: Safety of innovative food products
- Chapter 2: Innovation and science
- Chapter 3: Innovative food products and society
Who should attend?
The Summer School is primarily intended for PhD students and early-career researchers, as well as other scientists, academics, and representatives from public institutions, non-governmental organisations and European agencies. Participation is limited to a maximum of 300 participants. A selection will be made to ensure geographical balance and fair representation of all stakeholder groups in the audience.
