An online information session was held to present the recently published EFSA “Statement on safety of cannabidiol as a novel food: data gaps and uncertainties” to stakeholders. The event took place on 28 June 2022.

The objective of the meeting was to give an overview of the data gaps identified by the Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) after evaluation of the available literature data for the safety assessment of CBD as a food ingredient and food supplement.

An introduction on the status and the procedure requested for authorisation of cannabidiol as novel food was given.

The data gaps identified, regarding absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion, interaction with drugs, liver, gastrointestinal tract, endocrine and nervous systems, psychological function and reproductive and developmental functions, and presence of small particles were presented.
