Info session | Advancing Scientific Knowledge on the Welfare of Turkeys on farm: Insights from the EFSA Scientific Opinion
Background
In this webinar, EFSA will present the main outputs of its recently published Scientific Opinion on the welfare of turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo gallopavo) on farm. This opinion reviews the most up-to-date scientific research on the effects of housing and management conditions on the welfare of turkeys including poults, turkeys kept for meat production and breeding turkeys.
This Scientific Opinion was requested by the European Commission and may serve as a basis for potential future legislation, as turkey housing and management conditions are not currently regulated under EU law.
Objectives of the meeting
The objective of the meeting is to present the main outcomes of the welfare assessment included in the EFSA Scientific Opinion on the welfare of turkeys on farm, with a particular focus on selected husbandry and management practices. The meeting will also outline the approach and methodology used for the assessment, including EFSA’s stakeholder engagement strategy through which inputs from stakeholders were collected to inform the welfare assessment. During the question-and-answer session, the Chair of the EFSA Working Group on the welfare of turkeys and EFSA scientific officers coordinating this mandate will address questions from the audience related to the welfare assessment.
Who should attend?
This webinar is free of charge and open to anyone interested in learning about EFSA’s work in this area, including its recommendations for enhancing the welfare of turkeys on farm. EFSA stakeholders that attended the ‘Stakeholder meeting on the welfare of turkeys: Farming practices and data’ held in Brussels on 8th November 2023 are encouraged to participate.
Please note that the meeting recording will not be published. Presentations will be published online after the meeting.
