Background

In 2018, the European Commission initiated the European approach to Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, aiming to bolster the development of AI across Europe. Responding to this ambition, EFSA, together with the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union (Cdt), the European Medicines Agencies (EMA), and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) launched the grassroots initiative “Joint EU Forces on AI”. The initiative aims to collaboratively explore and make use of the benefits of AI, share expertise, and foster synergies.

Since its inception in 2019, the initiative has achieved various milestones, including the creation of the EU AI Virtual Community. This platform serves as a forum for collaboration and knowledge-sharing around AI, and its scope has expanded to accommodate the evolving needs of its members.

The EU AI Talk series serves as a vital part of this community, featuring panels that discuss various AI-related topics pertinent to the European Union. This year’s edition not only continued to explore AI’s impact on the European public sector, but also delved into recent advancements, especially in Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs). The event further aimed to raise awareness of the EU AI Virtual Community and strengthen its standing in the broader AI ecosystem.

Objectives of the events

The panel  also tackled the transformative potential of Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) within the European public sector. The event aimed to offer a comprehensive understanding of these technologies and discuss avenues for responsible adoption.

Specific objectives were:

  • Taking a deep dive into the EU AI Virtual Community and its role in shaping the AI landscape
  • Gaining a better understanding of the growing importance of AI within the European public sector and its impact on European Agencies
  • Understanding the impact of Generative AI and LLMs on the public sector and EU Agencies
  • Discussing collaborative approaches for responsible AI adoption and regulation
