Bisphenol A opinion adopted; to publish in January 2015
EFSA’s experts have finalised and adopted their scientific opinionOpinions include risk assessments on general scientific issues, evaluations of an application for the authorisation of a product, substance or claim, or an evaluation of a risk assessment on the risks to public health from bisphenol A (BPA) in foodstuffs. The milestone follows a comprehensive risk assessmentA specialised field of applied science that involves reviewing scientific data and studies in order to evaluate risks associated with certain hazards. It involves four steps: hazard identification, hazard characterisation, exposure assessment and risk characterisation of this substance. BPA is a chemical used to manufacture plastics and resins that are used in a variety of food contact materials as well as other consumer and industrial products.
The Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids adopted the opinion during its 10-11 December plenary meeting. EFSA will publish the opinion by the end of January 2015, allowing the necessary time for formatting and a thorough editorial check, which is standard for all EFSA scientific opinions.
EFSA has carried out an extensive consultation and engaged with national authorities and stakeholders to ensure the widest possible range of scientific views and information have been considered, including similar scientific assessments currently underway at Member State level.
