Info session on input data for the development of the Food Enzyme Intake Model (FEIM)

According to Regulation (EC) No 1332/2008, all food enzymes already on the EU market as well as new food enzymes are subject to a safety evaluation by EFSA. The outcome of this evaluation supports the European Commission to establish the first Community list for food enzymes.

Dietary exposure is an integral part of the safety evaluation. Since 2017 EFSA has been collecting data to develop a Food Enzyme Intake Model (FEIM). The data collection is reaching its end. Amid a public consultation on the full sets of collated data, EFSA organised this information session.

The event was organised with the following objectives:

  • Promote the understanding of technical factors used in the estimation of dietary exposure to food enzymes
  • Create opportunities for an open dialogue between EFSA and its partners and stakeholders
  • Exchange best practice in methodology on dietary exposure of food chemicals.

The event focused on four topics: food manufacturing processes in which food enzymes are (or may be) applied, process-specific technical data (food groups and conversion factors), mitigation of double counting and the layout and functionalities of the FEIM web tool.

Presentations given by EFSA staff, EFSA experts and industry representatives enhanced the understanding of the technical topic. Questions and answers sessions increased the clarity of the EFSA draft document under the public consultation. The two panel discussions rendered a fruitful interaction among the participants.
