79th Management Board meeting: Multi-annual work plan adopted; Update on risk communication activities

At its final meeting of 2018, EFSA’s Management Board confirmed the reappointment of Bernhard Url as Executive Director and discussed the Authority’s work programme for 2019 and beyond. The Board then adopted the multi-annual planning document for the period 2019-2021 and the 2019 budget.

The Board also received an update on risk communication activities and on progress with the implementation of EFSA’s IT roadmap.

Multi-annual work programme

The Board adopted EFSA’s multi-annual work programme for 2019-2021, as well as the draft plan until 2022, which will guide EFSA in implementing its strategic objectives.

Over the coming years, EFSA will explore the future of data-driven science, advancing its scientific risk assessment, processes, procedures and scientific methods. The Authority will also continue to prioritise its engagement with stakeholders as well as its partnerships with Member States, sister agencies and food safety organisations across the globe and optimise access to data through its tools and platforms.

The programming documents also make reference to the European Commission’s proposed reform of the General Food Law, which would introduce new tasks for EFSA and additional financial resources.

“EFSA has set out an ambitious work programme for the future despite clear financial constraints it has to operate within,” Jaana Husu-Kallio, Chair of the Board, said. “A positive outcome to the General Food Law reform discussions, with the necessary financial means to implement the new tasks, would allow EFSA to make a big step forward in the transparency of EFSA’s scientific processes and sustainability of EFSA’s panel-centred science production model.”

Risk communication activities

The Board received an update on the development of EFSA’s tools, products and channels for risk communication. The presentation included an overview of the legal and strategic framework, the evolution of EFSA’s website as well as the processes for content development and dissemination. Members noted the challenges of communicating clearly and accurately on complex risk assessments and acknowledged the quality of the materials developed jointly by EFSA’s scientists and communication professionals.

Examples were also given of the social science research that EFSA has been carrying out to better understand risk perceptions and the driving factors that shape EFSA’s own reputation.

Board members were also updated on the evolution of the EFSA Journal, including the upward trend of downloads and citations.
