Second Meeting of EFSA Stakeholder Forum
EFSA’s annual Stakeholder Forum brought together more than 100 representatives of stakeholder organisations, the European Commission, EFSA’s Management Board and EFSA staff for a one-day exchange of views on the Authority’s ongoing work and plans for the future.
Members of the Stakeholder Bureau took prominent roles in chairing workshops on topics such as transparency, innovation, the future of data, uncertainty and risk assessment research priorities.
The objectives of this year’s Forum were to:
- Reflect on the recommendations from the first Stakeholder Forum and how effectively they have been addressed.
- Exchange views and collect stakeholder input on EFSA’s multi-annual planning cycle and mid-term review of its 2020 strategy.
- Gather ideas on the post-2020 Strategy, building upon the outcomes of the EFSA scientific conference 2018.
- Collect input on the Stakeholder Engagement Approach, due to be reviewed in 2019.
Ms Jaana Husu-Kallio, the Chair of EFSA’s Management Board, said: “The Stakeholder Engagement Approach is part of the Open EFSA strategy, where we strive to inform our science via open calls for data, public and targeted consultations, and ensure the accessibility and relevance of our work via dialogue with our stakeholders.”
The recommendations from the plenary and five workshops will feed into EFSA’s strategic reflections and future activities within the 2021-2027 planning cycle.
The Stakeholder Forum is a permanent platform for stakeholder engagement established under the Stakeholder Engagement Approach (SEA), which was endorsed by the EFSA Management Board in 2016. As of November 2018, the EFSA stakeholder list comprises 112 registered organisations representing seven categories: consumer organisations (2), NGOs (18), industry and food businesses (61), farmers and primary producers (9), practitioners (11), distributors (4) and academia (7).
Alongside the annual Forum meeting and the Stakeholder Bureau, stakeholder groups have the opportunity to engage with EFSA through a number of targeted activities throughout the year, organised on the basis of their area of interest and expertise. These include discussion groups on particular topics, roundtables, info sessions and technical meetings.
