Public consultation on the draft opinion on bisphenol A (BPA) – exposure assessment

EFSA has launched an open consultation on a draft assessment of consumer exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) performed by the EFSA’s Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel). This is the Authority’s first review of exposure to BPA since 2006 and the first to cover both dietary and non-dietary sources. Occurrence data from scientific literature and available in the public domain have been collected and considered in this exposure assessment. In line with EFSA’s policy on openness and transparency, EFSA is now seeking feedback from the scientific community and stakeholders on this draft assessment of human exposure to BPA developed by the CEF Panel. As part of a two-stage process, at a later phase EFSA will publicly consult on the second part of its draft opinion, focussing on its assessment of the potential human health risks of BPA.

All stakeholders and interested parties are invited to submit written comments from 25 July to 15 September 2013. The electronic template provided with the documents should be used exclusively for the submission of comments, with reference made to the line and page numbers. Please note that comments submitted by email or post cannot be taken into account.

In addition, a submission will not be considered if it is:

• submitted after the deadline set out in the call;
• presented in any form other than what is provided for in the instructions and template;
• not related to the contents of the document;
• contains complaints against institutions, personal accusations, irrelevant or offensive statements or material;
• is related to policy or risk management aspects, which is outside the scope of EFSA’s activities.

EFSA will assess all comments from interested parties which are submitted in line with the criteria above. The comments will be further considered by the CEF Panel and taken into consideration if found relevant.

All submitted comments will be published in a report at the same time as the final scientific opinion. Comments submitted by individuals in a personal capacity will be presented anonymously. Comments submitted formally on behalf of an organisation will appear with the name of the organisation.
