Annual report on EFSA’s food and feed safety crisis preparedness and response 2010

This report presents EFSA activities related to food and feed safety crisis preparedness and urgent
responses. In 2010, one internal training exercise was organised to raise awareness amongst EFSA
response personnel of the principles of crisis response in the context of urgent risk assessment. In the
same period, EFSA received two urgent requests from the European Commission. The first was to
provide a statement on the risks for public health related to the presence of chlormequat residues in
table grapes originating from India. The second was the possible short-term risks for public and animal
health in the European Union posed by possible contamination of the feed and food chain due to ashfall
from the cloud formed after the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland. Both responses
to the urgent requests were delivered within statutory timeframes as EFSA statements.
