Zika and dengue: maps track distribution of vectors
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has updated its maps on the presence of invasive mosquitoes in Europe with new information on the geographical distribution of Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti – invasive mosquitoes which can transmit diseases, such as dengue and Zika.
The maps, which are presented in a new layout, show the current known distribution of AedesspeciesA subdivision of the genus, a species is a group of closely related and similar-looking organisms; for example, in the case of Homo sapiens (humans), the second part of the name (sapiens) represents the species in Europe and the Mediterranean basin. Data shown in the maps is collected through VectorNet, a joint initiative of EFSA and ECDC. The information on the mosquito presence is gathered by external experts of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases and validated by designated experts. However, the data do not represent the official view or position of the countries.
