Ad hoc meeting with industry representatives

On 23 (pm) and 24 (am) October 2019, EFSA met EuropaBio in the context of the third ad hoc meeting with industry representatives in 2019. The meeting provided an opportunity for open dialogue on various topics pertaining to the risk assessment of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

On 23 October, participants discussed technical topics such as e.g. the assessment of human dietary exposure in the context of marketing applications for GM food and feed, the scientific aspects of the 90-day feeding study in rodents as requested by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 503/2013 of 3 April 2013, and the EFSA explanatory note on the determination of newly expressed proteins in the context of marketing applications for GM food and feed.

On 24 October, EFSA and EuropaBio shared their respective experiences as regards the administrative processing of marketing applications for GM food and feed. EFSA also reported to the industry representatives on the progress made with mandates received from the European Commission on Gene Drive, Synthetic Biology and SDN-1 and 2 techniques.

The meeting took place in a constructive atmosphere and marks an important step in enhanced dialogue among the parties.
