Brain Health Consortium presenting Advancing NAMs for Neurotoxicity
Background
EFSA has long-standing experience in collaborating with key partners to advance scientifically robust non-animal approaches in the field of neurotoxicity. It plays a leading role in the development of the Developmental Neurotoxicity In Vitro Battery (DNT-IVB) and the associated OECD guidance, contributing to the harmonised development of Integrated Approaches to Testing and Assessment (IATA) and strengthening preparedness for chemical risk assessment needs.
This event presents the BrainHealth initiative, a project within the IRMA Programme launched in 2024 and led by EFSA’s Pesticide Peer Review Unit (PREV). The project aims to enhance regulatory-relevant mechanistic understanding of how chemical exposure may affect brain health and neurodevelopment through the integration of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), transcriptomics, and Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) development within IATA frameworks, thereby helping to fill data gaps in chemical risk assessment.
These efforts contribute to addressing current data and regulatory gaps and support future-ready risk assessment.
Objectives of the meeting
The objective of the event is to present the BrainHealth project and to foster dialogue with EFSA on its scientific approach to advancing NAM-based integrated approaches for neurotoxicity assessment.
