World Food Safety Day 2025: EFSA celebrates “Science in Action”
On 7 June, EFSA joins the global community in celebrating World Food Safety Day — a moment to reflect on our shared responsibility to ensure food remains safe at every stage of the supply chain. This year’s theme “Food Safety: Science in Action,” highlights the vital role of science in protecting consumers and building trust in the food we bring to our tables.
At EFSA, science is at the core of our mission to protect public health. We are committed to applying cutting-edge scientific knowledge to assess risks, deliver evidence-based advice, and support the development of effective food safety measures across Europe.
To mark the occasion, EFSA is releasing a range of communication materials designed to raise awareness of how science-based approaches help address food safety challenges and prevent foodborne risks. These activities are also being promoted in the framework of the joint Safe2EatEU campaign, conducted in collaboration with EU Member States.
Materials:
- A podcast episode with EFSA’s chief scientist, Carlos das Neves, featuring insights into regulatory science, the role of scientific evidence in food safety, and the day-to-day work of EFSA scientists.
- Customisable communication materials provided to Member States as part of the Safe2Eat campaign to support outreach at national level.
- An influencer-led video series from Poland, Spain, and Romania using a “Before/After” social media format to show how common food handling habits can be improved through simple, science-based actions.

To celebrate World Food Safety Day, EFSA took part in a series of events and meetings organised by the World Health Organisation, EU Member States and EU pre-accession countries in the days around 7 June. Engagements in Italy, Portugal, Türkiye, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia provided valuable opportunities to connect with international bodies, national authorities, stakeholders, and the public on the importance of science-based food safety for protecting public health.
By supporting knowledge exchange and the alignment of food safety standards across Europe and neighbouring regions, EFSA underscores its commitment to international cooperation and capacity-building.These efforts are essential to fostering a shared culture of food safety and ensuring that the food we eat remains safe - concretely putting science in action for the benefit of EU consumers.
