Biological monitoring

The European Union system for the monitoring and collection of information on zoonoses is based on Directive 2003/99/EC, which obliges the Member States of the European Union (EU) to collect data on the occurrence of zoonoses, zoonotic agents, antimicrobial resistance, animal populations and food-borne outbreaks. EFSA is assigned the tasks of examining these data and publishing annual European Union Summary Reports in cooperation with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). ECDC provides and analyses the data on zoonotic infections in humans. These reports illustrate the evolving situation in the EU and identify the pathogens that cause the most common zoonotic infections in humans.

EU Summary annual Reports

National zoonoses country reports: 2004-2022

National zoonoses country reports are used as a basis for the EFSA and ECDC European Union Summary Reports on Trends and Sources of Zoonoses, zoonotic agents, antimicrobial resistance and food-borne outbreaks in the European Union. The information given covers both zoonoses that are important for the public health in the whole European Union as well as zoonoses, which are relevant on the basis of the national epidemiological situation. The reports include information reported regarding animals, food, feeding stuffs and food-borne outbreaks.

EU-wide Baseline survey reports

The EU-wide baseline surveys on the occurrence of zoonotic agents in food and in various animal populations are organised by the European Commission. The surveys are fully harmonised and provide comparable data from all the Member States of the European Union (EU) for a specific time point. EFSA is responsible for analysing and publishing the results of these surveys. The results are used for specific purposes such as in the setting of EU targets for reduction of these agents and in the considerations on specific control measures.

EFSA also produces baseline survey protocols which propose technical specifications for the baseline surveys.
