Sunset Yellow: EFSA sets ADI
EFSA has established an Acceptable Daily IntakeThe acceptable daily intake (ADI) is an estimate of the amount of a substance in food or drinking water that can be consumed daily over a lifetime without presenting an appreciable risk to health. It is usually expressed as milligrams of the substance per kilogram of body weight and applies to chemical substances such as food additives, pesticide residues and veterinary drugs (ADI) of 4 mg/kg bw/day for the food colour Sunset Yellow. Experts have concluded that estimates of consumer exposure are well below this new ADI for all age groups.
In 2009 EFSA had re-evaluated the safety of Sunset Yellow and, based on the available scientific data, set a temporary ADI of 1 mg/kg body weight and recommended that further tests be conducted. In the light of new data submitted to EFSA, the ADI has now been raised.
Sunset Yellow (E 110) is a food colour currently authorised under Commission Regulation 1333/2008.
