La Comisión Técnica de Materiales en Contacto con Alimentos, Enzimas y Auxiliares Tecnológicos (CEP)* evalúa la seguridad de las sustancias químicas que se añaden a los alimentos o se utilizan en el envasado alimentario y los procesos relacionados. La labor de la Comisión Técnica se centra principalmente en las sustancias y procesos que evalúa la EFSA antes de que se autorice su uso en la UE.
Los miembros de la Comisión Técnica CEP son científicos procedentes de toda Europa con experiencia en:
- evaluación del riesgo químico asociado a las enzimas alimentarias y las sustancias químicas que se utilizan en la fabricación de materiales plásticos u otros envasados alimentarios
- toxicología (mamíferos): toxicidad crónica y subcrónica (estudios de dosis repetidas), genotoxicidad y mutagenicidad, toxicidad para el desarrollo y la reproducción, carcinogenicidad, alergenicidad e inmunotoxicidad
- ensayos de toxicidad en animales de experimentación y pruebas alternativas de toxicidad
- toxicocinética y toxicodinámica (ADME: absorción, distribución, metabolismo y excreción) de sustancias
- epidemiología (seres humanos)
- química (orgánica, analítica y sintética), especialmente en relación con la identificación química y la especificación de sustancias químicas, y con los ensayos de migración de los materiales que están en contacto con alimentos
- evaluación de la exposición y encuestas de consumo
- tecnología de los alimentos (procesos de fabricación y uso de coadyuvantes tecnológicos)
- microbiología alimentaria, incluida la biotecnología de enzimas que emplea microorganismos modificados genéticamente.
* La Comisión Técnica CEP continúa el trabajo de la mayoría de ámbitos que antes cubría la antigua Comisión Técnica de Materiales en Contacto con Alimentos, Enzimas, Aromatizantes y Auxiliares Tecnológicos (CEF). Por otro lado, ha delegado la responsabilidad de la evaluación de aromatizantes en la Comisión Técnica FAF.

Networks
Scientific Network on Food Contact Materials (FCM)
The FCM Network is a platform for cooperation on risk assessment activities and approaches of mutual interest to EFSA and Member States. The Network enhances collaboration between scientists involved in risk assessment of food contact materials to support and harmonise risk assessment practices in this area. The FCM Network was initiated in October 2013 as a subgroup of the Food Ingredients and Packaging Network for a period of three years. To continue this cooperation, it was proposed to maintain the Network through a stand-alone FCM Network for a further three years.
Meetings with Member States
Meetings with Member States bring together Panel experts, EFSA scientific staff and technical experts from Member States to discuss scientific issues and exchange views on various aspects of risk assessment related to food ingredients and packaging. Depending on the context, these meetings can be bilateral, involving experts from one Member State, or networking meetings, with experts from several Member States.
